The Siamese

It's been awhile since I last posted so I think I'll do a post on the cat breed: Siamese! :D Here goes.

First off, the Siamese originated from Thailand. It can be trained to walk on a leash and answered when called. One reason many people think of Egyptian cats as the Siamese is because when you look at old Egyptian paintings and there is a cat in the picture, it is often being held on a leash. A lot of cats can be trained to walk on leashes but Siamese cats are much easier to train. When people think of Siamese cats the thought often refers to the white (or cream) coat with chocolate colored "points" like this one in the picture above known as the chocolate point Siamese. Although, the traditional color of the Siamese is the seal point, first seen in Europe during the 1880's. Siamese "points" can range from chocolate colored points to seal points, blue points, lilac (frost) points, red points, cream points, tabby points and tortie points. Siamese coats are often short, but some Siamese cats can have long fur which makes them generally known as Ragdolls. Here is a picture of a long haired Siamese:
And here is a Ragdoll. There is really no difference except that Ragdoll's sometimes have longer fur than long haired Siamese cats. Illustrations of a cat with dark points like the seal point Siamese cat have been found in century-old manuscripts from Thailand. Also, the original Siamese cats, first described by the German explorer Peter Simon Pallas, had rounder faces than those today. The advantages of owning a Siamese cat is that they are highly sociable (but don't expect undivided attention), they are intelligent, easy to groom, and give almost dog-like devotion to their owners (but tend to be one person cats). The disadvantages are that they tend to have very loud voices and will use them even at the worst times (ha ha). They are often territorial and may not get along very well with other, less domineering breeds such as longhairs and British Shorthairs (they get along better with other Orientals and the Burmese breed). They are also more likely to be stolen than other breeds because of their obvious pedigree looks (but this isn't much of a problem if you keep them indoors at all times).
Siamese kittens are born pure white and develope their darker "points" as they grow older.

Lalage, owned by the writer Anthony Burgess, taken by him to Malaya. After a long life she died in Kota Bharu, just across the border from Siam.

Marcus, briefly owned by James Dean, was a gift from Elizabeth Taylor. Marcus was named after James Dean's uncle, Marcus Winslow, who along with his wife took care of Dean after his mother died.

Misty Malarky Ying Yang, pet of Amy Carter, daughter of US President Jimmy Carter.

Nemo, travelling companion of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson

Shan Shein - White House cat owned by Gerald Ford's daughter, Susan.
Fictional famous Siamese cats include:

Ayesha, Erik's cat from Susan Kay's Novel Phantom.

Bimbo, a Siamese kitten in Enid Blyton's Bimbo and Topsy.

In Garfield: The Movie, Nermal is a Siamese cat, unlike in the comics where he's a gray tabby cat.

Bucky the Katt from the comic strips "Get Fuzzy".

Cat College

Okay, I felt like I should post something since I haven't done it for a while. This past year on Dec. 1st Cat Channel started holding a three month curriculum of nine courses that gives foundation and understanding for caring for your cat(s).
I started this curriculum because I figured it would be fun to do. It is a little complicated at times but I find it to be loads of fun. Cat College is everyday through Feb. 28 and each month they have a "core class" and two "cat-lectives". This past December I finished the core class nutrition and the two cat-lectives, genetics and sociology. This month's core class and two cat-lectives are biology, language, and art history. If you wind up being Valedictorian you win a year supply of Eukanuba pet food! :D If you're interested in becoming a part of Cat College you still can, but you'll have to go back and do all of December's classes and then start this month's. Okay, I finally found some things to post (just for the fun of it). So first of all I'm going to start out with this rhyme that I found in one of the books I own called Catopia by Anne Mortimer (which by the way, is one of my favorite books that I happen to love).

Okay, I thought that since I am a cat fanatic, that once in a while I'd do a post on a certain cat breed, facts about it, etc. First of all, I'd like to thank my wonderful mother for giving me this idea. :) Now, let's begin.

Norwegian Forest Cat

I chose to begin with this breed because it's one of my most favorite ones.

Here are the colors and patterns for Norwegian Forest Cats.
If they are a solid color, then they'd be white, black, blue, red, or cream colored. If they aren't just one color, they can be a mixture of any. Example above.
Their coat is generally a thick double coat with a woolly undercoat and sometimes they have what looks like a lions mane, below.

Their eyes are large and round and can be all colors.
And their temperament is alert and active. They love people, but they also like freedom. So it's not a good idea to always keep them confined indoors.

Male Norwegian Forest cat's usually weigh 6 to 10 kg (13 to 22 lb), as females generally weigh half that size. And their hind legs are longer than their front legs.
They were first introduced in Australia in the late 1990's,
first introduced in Japan in the early 1990's,
first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1986,
first recognized in South Africa in 1994,
and first introduced in the United States in 1979.
Their alternative names are Skaukatt or Norsk Skogkatt. Hmmm...... interesting. :P
Their origin is Norway.
And their common 'nickname' is Weggie. (Pronounced wee-gy, if I'm correct. And believe me, I may not be, LOL.)
They are also rumored to be the early ancestors of the Maine Coon and the Long-haired Manx (more on those breeds later).
Well, I suppose this is the end of this post. This is pretty much all I can find on these cats, but if you look on my 'cat links' there are sure to be more on this breed.
